No pride without sex workers

By Namrata Mukherjee

Namrata Mukherjee reminds us to take our blinkers off for pride month observations
This photograph is a daytime shot and shows around 20 women members of Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee, a Kolkata-based support forum for sex workers, participating in the third edition of ‘Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk’ held in 2004. Around half a dozen individuals walking in the front row (facing the camera) in a sombre mood are holding on to a horizontal banner that has the name of the support forum written in Bengali. The logo of the support forum is printed below the name. Beyond the Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee contingent, scores of other pride walk participants can be seen. A truck can be seen slowly passing by to the left of the walkers, who are walking below a flyover structure. A few passers-by have stopped and are looking at the pride march. A few buildings, shops, hoardings and trees constitute the backdrop. The photograph has been presented stylistically – framed like a photograph taken out of an old album and tilted slightly upwards on the right hand side. Photo courtesy: SAATHII
